Equipment for Field Education Centres ($18,000):
JGI Uganda has established two field education centres to date . The medium term goal is to have at least 4 field education centres in the key chimpanzee habitat areas, but ideally we would like to see one in every habitat area of great apes. UWA has built an education centre in Mgahinga National Park and with the new centre at Budongo Forest Reserve there is the need for audio visual equipment and solar energy to power them so adults from the local communities can come and visit and view documentaries and other films that will help them be better neighbours. The cost for each of the first two centre to provide solar energy; audio visual etc is $9000US.
Budongo Forest Reserve ($66,400)
JGI Uganda is very active on the ground in Budongo Forest, which is one of the four largest chimp population habitat areas. We have several priority activities we would like to do over the next 2 years.
- Translocation of School: During the past two years, JGI and its collaborators particularly the Budongo Conservation Field Station have translocated a primary school that was originally in the forest to the periphery. This simple action has pushed up enrolment from less than 100 to over 300 pupils. There is still a need for furniture and an additional three classrooms. This is estimated to cost $40,000US. Timeframe needed January- December 2010.
- Land use arangements with landowners around Budongo Forest that have private forests that chimpanzees use, in order to encourage them to restrict logging and protect chimpanzees. JGI Uganda expect to require $10,000US in the first year (and larger amounts in the following years) to start the process with 2-3 landowners, signing 10 yr agreements on not cutting the trees and protecting the chimps on their land.
- Bulindi Community Centre: Bulindi Forest is a community forest only 20kms south of Budongo Forest Reserve; it is an important forest as a corridor connecting up fragmented populations of chimps to the two major habitat areas. The Bulindi Community contacted JGI for help. The initial idea that the community had was to do ecotourism with tracking the chimps in their forest. We discouraged this idea, due to the pressure already on this chimp community. But, on visiting the area, we realized the site was in a perfect location for providing 'a pit stop' for tourists traveling through the area, which they do, to visit the national parks. With support from Disney Animal Kingdom, JGI-Netherlands, JGI-Switzerland and a number of others a community eco-café has been established at Bulindi on the route from Masindi to Hoima. It is expected to form a popular tourist stop-over. It still requires some finishing touches to become operational estimated at $16,400US. Proceeds from the café will go to the local community to encourage them conserve their forest.
Kalinzu-Kasyoha Kitomi-Maramagambo Forest Complex ($140,000US)
- Securing of land for wildlife corridor between Kymabura Gorge and Kasyoha-Kitomi Forest Reserve. Funding needed $140,000US.
Northern Uganda/Mt. Otzi Forest Reserve ($161,900US)
JGI Uganda is undertaking activities in Mt. Otzi Central Forest Reserve; a forest that strides the borders of Uganda and Southern Sudan. This forest reserve is home to a remnant population of chimpanzees; the most northerly population in Uganda. We have two priority activities we would like to do in 2010.
Funding for community Sustainable alternative livelihoods in Mt. Otzi Central Forest Reserve ($5,500US)
Community Awareness campaign in Mt. Otzi Central Forest Reserve (USD 6,400)
- Distribution of educational materials to 1150 schools in Northern Uganda. $150,000US. The distribution of primary 5 and 6/7 materials to all schools in the North Western Districts of Uganda and teacher training workshops in all districts is a major priority for JGI Uganda to assist in the teaching the future generations in sustainable environmental practices and reduction in loss of forest habitat in these districts.
Cost of printing and distribution of materials to one school is $72US. This includes 4 copies of the teachers guides and 4 sets of posters.
