EDUCATION PROGRAMMES
Present:
Training Workshops
As the teachers in Uganda have not studied Environmental Education directly many of them feel that they do not have the knowledge and skills needed to teach it as part of their classes. Based on this information JGI decided to run EE workshops for both the teachers directly and the in-service teacher trainers, Centre Coordinating Tutors.
The purpose of the Environmental Education Training workshops is to capacity build the participants to better teach about the environment. It is also an opportunity to familiarize them with the JGI EE materials and our other education programmes. The workshop content, delivered over 4 days, is designed to stimulate interest in the environment and the topic of EE, to provide knowledge about the environment, and to enhance methodologies that are effective in teaching about the environment as well as other subject areas. The main methodology used is 'Cooperative Learning' based on the modules developed by UPHOLD (The Uganda Program for Human and Holistic Development) in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Sports in 2005.
Has part of the workshops, all participants are taken to a natural forest to learn more about the importance of teaching about the environment and the key issues that need to be covered.
Progress to date (as of August 2008)
- 87 CCTs have participated in the EE Training workshops
- 287 teachers have participated in the EE Training workshops
