EDUCATION PROGRAMMES

Present:

Primary School Environmental Education in Kabarole, Kyenjojo, Bundibugyo and Kamwenge Districts in Uganda

Over the last 5 years, JGI-Uganda has been developing a holistic EE programme for primary schools in Uganda. The goal of the programme is to ensure that every child leaves primary school with a good basic understanding of the environment so that they are able to make informed decisions concerning the environment. The four main components of the programme are indicated below.

Primary School Programme
Formal Education
Non-formal Education
Material Development
Training Worlshops
Field Centres
Roots and Shoots Programme

The material development and training components work together to build the capacity of the teachers to improve on the quality and quantity of EE taught within the classroom and school setting. These are complimented by the other two programmes, the Field Centres and the Roots & Shoots programme. These give the pupils a chance to experience nature first hand and avenues through which they can practically implement the knowledge they have gained.
