EDUCATION PROGRAMMES

Present:

Kalinzu & Budongo Forest Education Centres

The purpose of the Forest Education Centres is to provide Environmental Education facilities that pupils can visit to learn more about the forest environment, its importance and what people can do to help protect it. Half-day EE programmes are developed to be delivered from the centres. The centre staff are trained to deliver the programme and the centre is equipped with the necessary resources required for the programme. The half-day EE programme consists of a short forest walk and a number of activities inside and outside the education centre.

Progress to date (as of May 2008):

  • Over 4 years 4596 Primary 5 pupils from 20 schools have participated in the programme at Kalinzu Forest Education Centre
  • Over 13 months 1284 Primary 6 pupils from 11 schools have participated in the programme at Budongo Forest Education Centre

Future plan

  • Funds are being sought to expand the programme to cover the lower primary classes
  • Piloting the “Chimaka The chimpanzee” story book in the schools that participate in the
Budongo Forest Education programme. The target class will be Primary four. The purpose ofthe pilot programme is to enhance the pupils’ knowledge about Chimpanzees while improving their reading skills.
