JGI UGANDA FIELD PROGRAMMES & EDUCATION PROGRAMMES
Introduction:
JGI's core conservation efforts in Uganda focus of 5 forests blocks that contain over 75%of the chimpanzee population in Uganda. These include:
1.Budongo Central Forest Reserve
2.Bugoma Central Forest Reserve
3.Kibale Forest National Park
4.Kalinzu Central Forest Reserve
5.Kasyoha Kitomi/MaramagamboCentral Forest Reserves
In addition to the above core target areas, JGI is undertaking conservation activities in Mt Otze Forest Reserve in North Western Uganda. There are plans to undertake more activities in this region. The West Nile area has the highest recorded levels of illegal trade in chimpanzees in Uganda. Secondly, the chimpanzee habitat in Northern Uganda is highly vulnerable because of the current increase in immigration and settlement in the aftermath of a 20 year protracted war in this region.
